Anderson, Indiana sits less than an hour northeast of Indianapolis on I-69, and it has a genuine knack for surprising people who expect to pass through without stopping. There are 2,000-year-old earthworks less than 10 minutes from downtown. There’s a restored 1929 theater that still hosts live performances. There’s a quarter-mile oval racetrack that bills itself as the fastest high-banked track in the world. And there’s a fudge shop with a two-story slide and a gift shop full of things that will make your family lose it.
This is an honest local list — not everything, just the things worth your weekend.
1. Mounds State Park

The best thing in Anderson, and it’s not close. Mounds State Park protects ten prehistoric earthworks built by the Adena-Hopewell people more than 2,000 years ago. The centerpiece is the Great Mound — the largest earthwork of its kind in Indiana — and the trails that wind past it run through old-growth hardwood forest along the White River. It’s genuinely beautiful and genuinely ancient, which is a combination Anderson doesn’t always get credit for.
The park is less than 10 minutes from downtown. Bring comfortable shoes. There’s fishing on the White River if you want to extend the visit. Dogs are welcome on leash.
2. Paramount Theatre

One of those regional theaters that makes you stop and look twice. The Paramount opened in 1929 and was restored to its original art deco splendor — the lighting, the artwork, the historic atmosphere are intact in a way that most venues this size don’t manage. It hosts live music, touring productions, and community performances throughout the year.
If something’s on when you’re in town, go. If nothing’s scheduled, the building itself is worth a look from the outside. Check the current calendar at https://www.andersonparamount.org.
3. Uranus Fudge Factory & General Store

Full disclosure again: this is our store. We’re putting it at #3 because Mounds State Park earned the top spot and we’re trying to be straight with you.
Uranus Anderson is at 1423 W. 53rd St, Anderson, IN 46013. Walk in and you’ll find a gift shop full of things that will require explaining to whoever you’re with — Lip Shit lip balm, Uranus air fresheners, fudge in more than eighteen flavors, apparel, and enough branded merchandise to supply a very confusing Secret Santa exchange.
Outside, there’s an 18-hole mini golf course and a large playground with a two-story slide — genuinely good for kids, genuinely entertaining for adults watching kids. Hot dogs and ice cream are available in a separate building on the property. Ask for Mason or Aimee if they’re working; between the two of them they know everything about the place.
Open 9am-8pm. Everything in the shop also ships from UranusGeneralStore.com.
Someone came in last week and ordered a bunch of fudge and really enjoyed it. Her name was Janet, and she was real.
4. Anderson Speedway

The self-proclaimed “World’s Fastest High-Banked Quarter Mile Oval,” and they’re not being modest about it. Anderson Speedway hosts weekly Saturday night racing through the summer season — stock cars, figure-8 racing, sprint cars, and the annual Pay Less Little 500 Sprint Car Race. Even if you’re not a racing fan, the atmosphere of a small local oval track on a summer Saturday night is its own kind of American experience.
Check the schedule at https://andersonspeedway.com before you go — race nights vary and some events sell out.
5. Rangeline Nature Preserve

A quieter alternative to Mounds if you want trails without the crowds. Rangeline Nature Preserve sits along the White River and offers well-kept walking trails through natural Indiana landscape. Free to visit, low-key, and a good option if you’re traveling with dogs or want somewhere to decompress after a morning at the Speedway. Open 7:30am-9pm everyday with free parking.
6. Anderson Museum of Art

Free admission, consistently well-programmed, and easy to underestimate. The Anderson Museum of Art rotates exhibitions regularly and has built a reputation for showing work that takes genuine risks for a regional institution. Worth an hour on a rainy afternoon or as a downtown anchor if you’re walking the area.
Hours:
Monday & Tuesday – Closed
Wednesday – Friday: Noon – 5 pm
Saturday: 10 am – 5 pm
Sunday: 2 pm – 5 pm
7. The World’s Largest Ball of Paint (Alexandria, ~15 min)

Technically not Anderson, but close enough that it deserves a mention. Alexandria, Indiana — about 15 minutes north — is home to the World’s Largest Ball of Paint, which started as a baseball in 1977 and has been painted by visitors ever since. It now weighs over 5,000 pounds. It is free to visit. It is exactly as great as it sounds, and it’s the kind of stop that turns a normal weekend into a story.
8. Oakley Brothers Distillery

A craft distillery in Anderson producing its own spirits and serving cocktails made from them on-site, with a restaurant and lounge attached. A good option for an evening out — local, unhurried, and considerably more interesting than a chain restaurant.
Hours:
Wednesday: 4-9p
Thursday: 4-9p
Friday: 3-11p
Saturday: 11a-11p
Sunday: 3-9p
9. Cardinal Greenway

One of Indiana’s longest rail-trail conversions — 62 paved miles running through Anderson, Muncie, and the surrounding area. Pick it up in Anderson for a flat, scenic walk or ride past farmland, woods, and river crossings. The gentle grade makes it accessible for families and casual cyclists. Bring your own bike or rent one from somewhere.
